Smart Heating Controls

Tado X Gen 2 vs Tado V3+
Which Smart Thermostat Should You Buy?

Comparing Tado X Gen 2 with Tado V3+? Check the heating system, existing devices and scheduling behaviour before choosing.

Quick summary

  • Tado X Gen 2: the updated X thermostat, with Matter and Thread and compatibility with existing X devices.
  • Tado V3+: uses a different bridge and device family, and offers scheduled Early Start that can matter for slow underfloor heating.

Feature comparison

Early Start matters for underfloor heating

V3+ Early Start can pre-warm to reach a target temperature at the scheduled time. Tado X Gen 2 does not offer that same scheduled Early Start setting. X’s AI Assist Preheat Before Arrival is a separate, arrival-based feature. For slow wet underfloor heating, plan warm-up time and check the scheduling behaviour before switching.

Will it work in your home?

The boiler model, control protocol, hot water cylinder, valves and heating zones all matter. Existing V3+ devices cannot be retained as X devices in the same Home. Professional checks are especially useful for S-Plan, Y-Plan and wet underfloor heating.

Check compatibility, use the thermostat picker or ask us about your system.

Benefits and trade-offs

Tado X Gen 2

Matter and Thread connectivity, the updated white thermostat and compatibility with existing X devices suit an X-family installation.

Check the border router, boiler protocol and kit. X cannot share a tado Home with V3+ devices, optional automation uses AI Assist, and X has no equivalent V3+ scheduled Early Start setting.

Tado V3+

V3+ can extend a compatible existing V3+ installation. Scheduled Early Start can help slow wet underfloor heating reach its target at the planned time.

V3+ uses its older communication system rather than X’s Matter and Thread setup. Some automation uses Auto-Assist. Check the exact product’s availability and boiler compatibility.

Products and installation

Questions before switching

Can I add Gen 2 to existing Tado X?
Yes, Gen 2 works within the X family. Check the kit and border router for the installation.
Can I add X to my V3+ Home?
No. X and V3+ use different communication systems and cannot share the same tado Home.
Does X Gen 2 need a subscription?
App control and schedules do not require AI Assist. Some extra automation does; check current tado terms.
What should I check for underfloor heating?
V3+ scheduled Early Start can pre-warm to reach a target at the scheduled time. X’s arrival-based Preheat Before Arrival does not replace that setting.
