Your questions, answered
Is the Tado° X compatible with my heating system?
Tado X can suit many UK combi, system and conventional boilers, wet underfloor heating, heat pumps and district heating systems, but the exact model, controls and wiring must be checked before buying. Use our compatibility guide and send photos if you are unsure.
Does the Tado° X control hot water?
Hot water scheduling requires the appropriate UK Wireless Receiver X and a compatible hot water system. A Wired Smart Thermostat X alone does not control a hot water cylinder. This applies to both original X and Gen 2; check the receiver and kit, not just the thermostat name.
Is it a wireless thermostat?
The X family has wired and wireless options. A wired thermostat replaces a suitable wired room control. The wireless temperature sensor communicates with a compatible X receiver and can use an appropriate stand. Match the kit to the wiring, heating and hot water controls.
I don’t have wiring where I want to install it. Can you help?
Yes. The Wireless version with a Tado Stand is ideal for placing the thermostat on a shelf, desk, or table. If you want it wall-mounted with no existing wiring, we can provide a quote for a custom installation.
Is it easy to use?
Very. The Tado app gives you full control over your heating and hot water. You can schedule, make manual changes, and monitor usage in real-time. It also supports Geofencing, Open Window Detection, and smart integrations with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit.
Do I need a subscription?
App control and heating schedules do not require AI Assist. X uses the optional AI Assist service for additional automation, including Preheat Before Arrival with Geofencing. V3+ uses Auto-Assist. Check tado’s current features and subscription terms; the two services are not interchangeable.
Can you install a second-hand or pre-owned Tado thermostat?
Yes, we can install second-hand Tado° X thermostats, but please note that we cannot provide a warranty or support for devices not purchased through us. Contact us before booking to confirm compatibility and configuration.
What if I want to zone multiple rooms?
Tado° X supports multi-room zoning using Smart Radiator Thermostats X. These can be added to each radiator for individual room control. Contact us to plan a custom multi-zone setup.
Will it work with my specific boiler brand?
Boiler brand alone does not establish compatibility. Tado X supports suitable relay and OpenTherm systems, but some manufacturer-specific digital protocols supported by older tado products are not supported by X. Send your boiler model and photos of the current controls before buying.
What changed with Tado X Gen 2?
Gen 2 introduces a slimmer white thermostat with a circular touch control, LED display and rechargeable USB-C battery. See the Tado X Gen 2 page for the current hardware. The original X page shows the earlier black-display model.
Can Gen 2 work with my existing Tado X or V3+ devices?
Gen 2 works within the existing X family. X and V3+ devices cannot share the same tado Home because they use different communication systems. Do not buy X devices as direct additions to a V3+ Home.
Does Tado X Gen 2 have V3+ Early Start for underfloor heating?
Tado X Gen 2 does not have the same scheduled Early Start setting as V3+. V3+ can pre-warm to reach the target temperature at the scheduled time. X’s AI Assist Preheat Before Arrival is arrival-based and is a separate feature. With slow wet underfloor heating, allow for warm-up time and compare the scheduling behaviour before switching.
